TELAMON QUINTET

ABOUT

Telamon Quintet is a jazz, ethno-jazz, and afro-jazz music ensemble led by the drummer and composer Mauro Patti. The quintet in question was born as a reduced version of the Telamon Project, Patti’s music project, which, in its complete form, consists of 9 members.

The name of the project and the album is derived from the figure of Telamone, a famous one of which was found almost intact in Agrigento, belonging to the ancient temple of Zeus Olympios. It is depicted as a solid giant made of tufa stone with raised elbows. Also known as Atlas, it was placed, along with other Telamons, to support the roof of the temple, symbolizing the strength of unity. Due to its philosophical significance, it represents the emblem of this project, emphasizing the indispensability of teamwork.

THE GROUP

The Telamón Quintet ensemble, composed of professionals and trusted individuals of the composer, consists of 2 saxophones, piano, double bass, and drums. Guglielmo Pagnozzi plays the soprano sax, Giovanni Benvenuti on the tenor sax, while the rhythm section includes Pierpaolo Zenni on piano, Matteo Bonti on double bass, and Mauro Patti on drums and percussion.

The project’s repertoire, consisting exclusively of original compositions and arrangements by Mauro Patti, is stylistically related to modern afro-jazz with strong influences from genres such as jazz, afro-cuban jazz, afrobeat, ethnic music (Turkish and Persian), math-rock, and metal. These sounds all converge in the popular Sicilian and Agrigento musical tradition, acting as a bridge between various genres, adding value and enriching them further.

This is a strongly identity-driven project that tells a story, that of Agrigento, through the deeds of its historical and mythological figures and the magnificence of its places.
